Option E: Leisure, sport and tourism

Leisure is defined for the purposes of this optional theme as any freely chosen activity or experience that takes place in non‑work time.

The leisure industry is a significant and rapidly expanding global economic sector. This option is designed to illustrate the pattern and diversity of leisure activities, their increasing popularity and their impact on environments, culture and economy on a range of scales from global to local. Issues and conflicts arise for planners and managers in meeting leisure demand, conserving natural resources and avoiding social conflict.
The theme focuses specifically on tourism, sport and recreation. Although the three terms are defined separately, they overlap and participation in them may be simultaneous. For example, a sporting activity may occur during a vacation.

1) Use the Course companion text book p231 to start a glossary. Write definitions for the terms leisure, recreation, sport and tourism.

2) Individually, create a list of the activities that you take part in during non-work time.
3) Share your list with 4 others in the class.
4) Create a 3 circle venn diagram, the headings for each circle 'recreation, tourism and sport'. (figure 9.1 on p231).
5) Try to classify your own leisure activities from your list. What are the challenges to this task? Write this down.
6) Look at the info graphic below. Use TRRAC to analyse the growth in tourism (bottom right graph).
7) Create a mind map to suggest reasons for the growth of tourism.

The International Ecotourism Society (TIES):
Ecotourism is: "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)
Principles of Ecotourism:
Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles:
  • Minimize impact.
  • Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
  • Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.
  • Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate.
